I Have Learned About My Writing - 879 Words

I have learned much from this course and I truly believe that I will take much of this information into my future in education. I learned so much about not only how to write in general, but more specifically my writing too. I think that the greatest factor about my writing that I realized I need to work on is preciseness. I have realized that my writing can be â€Å"beating around the bush†, and instead of making a paragraph too wordy, I should just get to the point and then analyze. I learned that a beneficial writing strategy can be overviewing the topic briefly, stating the argument, and then using supporting details like quotes and examples that back up the original argument. In high school, I took the International Baccalaureate level of English that my school offered a selected amount of students from beginning of my junior year to the end of my senior year. In those two years we focused really on analyzing poems, Shakespearian plays, and a few novels such as Sula, House of the Spirits, and The Scarlet Letter. We studied intensively how to analyze, annotate, break each part of the novel and ask â€Å"why, what if, how.† Everything I took out of IB help me to this very day when I am reading and examining a novel. However, IB did not teach me how to write a structured essay, I feel like I learned more how to analyze and verbally express my thoughts. We did not write much essays and in those two years. 1984 Literary Analysis Essay Example For Students

1984 Literary Analysis Essay 1984’s main character is Winston Smith, a man who doubts the ethics of the over powering tyrannical government that rules Oceania, one of three superstates in the world of 1984. Big Brother, the given to the government in the book, has developed its own language, is at constant war with the other two superstates, and watches its citizens at all times. The book starts off with Winston slowly figuring out that Big Brother is not exactly what it seems and in this society thinking for yourself has become punishable by death. As Winston’s rebellion progresses he begins to wonder if life has always been this way or if life had once consisted of a government which allowed people to think for themselves and be individuals. He could not remember very well as to what life was like before Big Brother came into existence, only bits as pieces of his childhood could be recollected, but nothing to establish any solid evidence of there ever being another type of government other that Big Brother. Oceania, Eastasia, and Eurasia are the three battling superstates. Each has an identical government, one that is at a never-ending war with each other in order to gain complete power over the people that live there. They did this by using methods developed by past dictators such as Stalin, Mussolini and Hitler. Big Brother manipulates its citizens into making them think the way that they want them to think. However, instead of only using brainwashing techniques, Big Brother also uses Newspeak and telescreens. Newspeak is the official language of Oceania, it was created with its only intention of abolishing all unorthodox thought, for example, the word bad is replaced by the word ‘ungood. ’ The telescreens watch all of the people that are allowed to be educated, at all times, watching for any action, word, or possible thought that could be unorthodox. These two Orwell inventions were foretelling that we see the equivalent of Newspeak every day in present day society when we are â€Å"politically correct. † Telescreens are present in nearly every commercial institution, and sometimes in our own homes. I think that Orwell may have been trying to warn America and all other countries about the control of over powering governments. When a coworker named Julia secretly approaches Winston, he learns that he is not alone in his belief that Big Brother is ‘ungood. ’ Winston and Julia become lovers and eventually begin to share their feelings of rebelliousness to O’Brien, another fellow coworker who is believed to be a member of a rebel group known as the Brotherhood. About two weeks later the shocking and disturbing turning point of the story is unveiled. Here is where Orwell introduces the whole philosophy behind this book. Orwell also brings terror into the story when he writes about what is really behind Big Brother; Oceania’s government sends a representative into the plot. A government, very similar to many of the governments in our present society, is at the head of Oceania, and that is where the unmistakable reality of 1984 becomes obvious. The sole manipulative technique used by Big Brother is one that is virtually unrecognizable-mental deception. Metaphysics, or the belief that there is existence beyond our comprehension, is represented by Big Brother when the reader learns about doublethink, the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind at the same time and fully accepting both of them. When this is accomplished what they have is basically a shell of a man, unable to think for himself, they then reprogram his mind, 1984 essay. One example of this in the book is when O’Brien, who is actually one of the leaders of Big Brother, uses a torturing device in order to make Winston believe that 2 + 2 = 5. Winston knew what O’Brien was trying to do and tried to resist, but there came a point after many countless hours possibly even a day or two of torture that when O’Brien held up four fingers Winston actually saw five. At the very end of the book they let Winston go, however, not before they were successful with reprogramming his mind. The very last line in the book is Winston saying, â€Å"I love Big Brother. †

Informative Speech on Tourism INTRO Imagine yourself flying in a plane to US for a summer job. You are travelling to experience new country, job, to meet new friends from all over the world. And you think that you are really happy to be in that position. Everything seems to be perfect in your life, except some insignificant details. But all of a sudden an armed psycho puts a gun barrel to your head and proclaims that he wants to change the plane course, and if this will not be done he will kill you. You never know how serious his intentions can be. You begin to fell panic realizing that you can die very soon. What will happen next? Will the pilot change the course? Will the mad guy kill you to show others that his intentions are serious and just grab a new victim? Or will he explode a bomb and everyone in the plane will die? You never know. Most of you probably have already understood that today I am going to talk to you about terrorists and their actions. I am doing a research paper for my written communications class and I have read much information about the issue. Even in the first century AD, in Palestine, there was a sect of the Sicarians, which used to kill the Jews who had common deals with the Romans ( Boltunov). In the nineteenth century Philosophy of the bomb prevailed. This philosophy supported the principle by which small groups of people would be able to cause the very maximum of chaos (quot. They act this way because of their strong believes about certain kinds of politics or religion. They are sure that their actions will bring a benefit to their country and will help to change the life people in a good way. They believe that they are fighting for right moral principles. There were some peaceful victims during the action. Usually, it is necessary to pay with blood for the better future (quot. Boltunov M. p.32). Second, very common type of the terrorists is sadists. The people who do not accept any rules and regulations at all. They hate to be controlled by somebody. They do not care about the people's lives. They need power, and they prefer to reach it by using violence. Usually such people prefer to take hostages. It is real pleasure for them to feel that they have a right to decide who will be killed, and who will stay alive. Third main group includes the people who have different kinds of mental problems. The mental thinking of such people may also include the moral features of the terrorists from both of the previously mentioned types. They also seek power and act fanatically. Their logical conclusions are mostly unpredictable, therefore, it is quite difficult to fight with them. They are called maniacs. Beside these three main groups, there are also many single terrorists who act because of their personal motivations. It is impossible to describe all of them. They can vary from person to person. Progressivism in the United States took place in the period between the Spanish-American War and the entry of the United States into the great World War. It was a time for change in America in all walks of life, as well as a time for reform. It was marked by Theodore Roosevelts 7 and a half years in office, the Rough Rider put it upon himself to make the first strides towards reform. These reforms included the cracking down on illegal monopolies and so forth. During this era large cities transformed into large metropolises, small towns into large cities and new towns sprang up nearly everywhere. Reforms also included the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth amendments. The progressive era really had significant impact in Americas history. The progressive movement had many origins. One of these was the battle against governmental corruption and inability, in other words a struggle for civil services reform. The progressive movement was initiated by liberals in both political parties, the fight for government reform can be traced back to Liberal Republicans(An Oxymoron, Mr. Jetel?) during the Grant administration and Mugwumps. Citizens were enraged, with big businesses growing influence in all branches of government and sought ways to purify it. Big Business was also a target of progressivism. During this time presidents like Roosevelt and William Howard Taft tried to regulate and control big business. Many well educated people of the time, as well as moderately prosperous businessmen and members of other professions(middle class) felt threatened by the increasing power of big business and the tycoons. Violent and brutal deaths may have more effect on the children, causing them permanent trauma. When a parent has been ailing or has been terminally ill, therefore his or her death expected would produce slightly different results than when the death of a parent is that of the unexpected nature. The period of time since the death is likely to determine how intense the grief is in the child. This relationship remained even after controlling for the independent variable-psychiatric disorders, in the dead parent. Children from those families, where one parent had succumbed due to factors like suicide were not likely to develop post traumatic stress disorder or other related psychiatric disorders than those in families that had had one parent die of other causes. Death of a parent or both is ,according to experts, always associated with causing great depression, post traumatic stress disorder ,anxiety, suicidal behavior and other complicated emotional problems, like severe and lasting unhappiness commonly referred to as grief. According to the most of the experts in matters concerning child psychology, are of the view that their findings have profoundly important clinical and health implications. They believe that the best way to mitigate the devastating effects of parental bereavement in children is to prevent unnecessary early death in their folks by improving, for instance, detection and consequently treatment of illnesses like bipolar, personality disorders and substance /alcohol abuse and by holistically addressing all the lifestyle correlates that are associated with these illnesses that are likely to lead to premature death (Howarth, R. A. (2011). It is always recommended that, when a parent or both die, the surviving caregivers must be monitored for illnesses like depression and post traumatic stress disorders since their psychiatric and mental health drastically affects that of the children they are taking care of. "Given the high risk of depression and post traumatic stress disorder, bereaved children should be closely monitored and immediately treated for any their psychiatric disorder," Nadine M. Melhem said. Its also said that further studies should be done to examine the long-term effect that bereavement has on children to test for the mechanisms by which these parental bereavement causes these effects to identify some of the subset of bereaved families that may be in need of treatment, hence framing targets for timely intervention and preventive efforts. Racial profiling has become a significant and controversial issue across the nation nowadays. In general, racial profiling is defined as discriminatory behaviors of law enforcement officers that target people for suspicion in breaking the law solely based on their race or ethnicity in the belief that certain minority groups have a higher chance to engage in unlawful behavior. It is often discussed in the context of traffic stops by local or state police officials. African Americans are the number one targets and victims of this law enforcement strategy. Racial profiling is not only wrong, unfair and discriminatory, but also a form of racism and a violation of the rights of African Americans, therefore law enforcement strategy needs to come to an end. The most frequent use of racial profiling is in traffic stops, it deals with situations when minorities were stopped, interrogated or searched because of their race or ethnicity. Individual law enforcement agent who profile suspects solely on the basis of race or ethnicity violates the rights of those minorities. When race and ethnicity become factors in suspicious behavior, the civil rights of racial and ethnic minorities as a group are violated. Many members of minority groups across the nation have been claiming that police often use traffic violations as a pretext to stop a vehicle to investigate other possible crimes, such as drug and/or weapons violations, particularly African Americans, have long complained that the police, especially in suburban areas, stop them. For example, one of the scholarly articles on this issue states: â€Å"The stopping of black drivers, just to see what officers can find, has become so common in some places that this practice has its own name: Afr ican A... ...t apparent issues with racial profiling is that it violates the Constitution. According to the Fourth Amendment, American citizens are supposed to be protected from unreasonable searches and seizures (Feder, 2). Thus, most cases of racial profiling are violating this Constitution because the race of a person is not a reasonable justification to search someone. In addition, the Fourteenth Amendment states "deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." which suggests that all citizens are to be equally treated under the law. If this was the case, then everyone should have been treated equally, however, the fact is that African Americans are more likely to be searched by police and less likely to be treated as law-abiding citizens while white people are being treated the opposite way. This is conflicting the concept of equal protection.

In the decades following the civil war, many factors altered the American city. As urbanization and industrialization developed simultaneously, cities were provided with supply of labor for factories and improved transportation. Commercial farming, followed by a shift in population of people relocating from rural areas to more modern cities greatly influenced the evolution of the America city. As well as a significant increase in immigration to the states, these are the most prominent factors influencing the development of the American city. A number of improvements in urbanization and industrialization made the growth of cities possible. Cities gave way to streetcar cities because people had little choice but to live in walking distances. By the 1890s, both horse-drawn cars and cable cars were being replaced by electric trolleys, elevated railroads and subways, which could transport people to urban residence. These improvements in urban transportation made it possible for more people to immigrate into the cities making it even bigger. As cities expanded outward, they also soared upward, since increasing land values in the central business district dictated the construction. Skyscrapers had replaced church spires as the dominant feature of American urban skylines and the buildings mostly had electric lights for commercial purposes. Urbanization and industrialization greatly changed the American city to what it is today. Commercial farming greatly impacted the development of the American city towards the end of the nineteenth century. The need for a massive number of farmhands diminished over time, and forced a majority of people living in rural areas of the states to more modern cities to seek work opportunities. This offered more jobs to be available for the newly arrivals, and in turn shaped how the cities operated. Commercial farmers also contained the ability to raise a single cash crop for the single purpose to make profit. This greatly improved the economy of cities across America. Commercial farming had a prominent change on the American city. As immigration to the states increased to the more modern cities, the cities changed significantly. New immigrants greatly increased the population of these cities, forcing them to expand. The growth of American metropolis was magnificent. In 1860, no city in the United States could boast one million inhabitants. But by 1900, New York held about 3.5 million citizens. A growing immigrant population to meet the increased need for workers led to overcrowding and unsanitary conditions within urban areas. Immigrants also developed ethnic neighborhoods that helped to change the character of the American city. Immigration played an important part into the change of the American city. Many key factors played roles into the evolution of the American cities across the nation. The most prominent of these were the era of urbanization and industrialization, commercial farmers bringing a rich economy to the city life, and newly arriving immigrants forcing the American cities to thrive. INTRODUCTION The following report describes the activities carried out during a 6-week, Full-time internship at the American university of lebanon, Finance Department. The document contains information about the organization and the responsibilities performed throughout the period between: the 1st of July until 31st of July, 2014. The first part of the report offers an overview of the organization, and then describe the process which has been implemented by finance department according to the policy which has been approved by the higher management represented by the university president and the Vise president of finance and administration. Finally the report wraps up with a few closing remarks and conclusions from the experience. The American University of Lebanon is a non-profit institution for public benefit founded in 2007 to provide a student-centered American-style education that embodies the philosophy, standards, and teaching practices of the American higher education model. AUL admits all qualified students regardless of social, ethnic, or religious background. Students are admitted based on a record of past academic performance and potential for success, including capacity to engage in self-directed learning and demonstrated high levels of critical thinking. At AUL, young Lebnonis do more than co-exist – they learn lasting values of respect for the individual and a spirit of free inquiry, and they thrive in a culture of achievement and accountability. Today nearly 1,100 students from all parts of Lebnon study at AUL. The university currently offers six academic programs that lead to a bachelor’s degree, as well as a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) and continuing education classes from its Professional Development Institute. The MBA program allows students to customize their degree by offering three areas of specialization: Leadership, Project Management, and Finance. Undergraduate degree programs include Business Administration, Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Information Technology, International Studies, and English-Journalism. The Professional Development Institute at AUL provides professionals, companies, and organizations with access to professional education programs, including English language studies and project management. Rounding out the university experience is a robust campus life, with several university sports teams and more than a dozen student-sponsored clubs and other activities. Monthly adjustment Purchasing and Payment: Finance department making sure that no-financial transaction will be processed without proper authorization and it is the responsibility of all staff to ensure that commitments entered into are legal, reasonable and provide value of money. After understanding the all principles and rules, starting to work with each staff separately, I have the chance to work with the accounting officer who is responsible for account payable and the cashier. The accounting officer is making sure to have document every transaction and have original acceptable document according to the policy, also he is responsible to check all daily transaction and making the necessary entry and records. The accounting officer is responsible to preparer the balance sheet, approving the paycheck, fund transfer after getting the permission from finance director. The staff that is responsible for managing the account payable is responsible to check the paperwork which has been approved by the accounting officer then make the payment through Bank Transfer or Bank Check or Cash and getting the necessary invoice and signatures. Also the account payable staff is making sure to make the payment at due date without any delay in order to  have the services continues without any interruption or penalty calm. The Cashier is responsible for managing the cash (treasure) making payment and receiving the due installment (tuition) payment for the customers. The Bursar is responsible for managing the tuition due payment with accordance with register office, also he is responsible for managing the account receivable. The account receivable is responsible for issuing the due invoice for the customers and sends it to them by email , then making sure to chase these invoices till get paid by the customers Audit process: there are two audit offices are responsible to monitor the all financial process and transaction within the university a. Internal Audit office : is responsible to check all document and statement on daily basis b. Things have definitely changed over the past century, as we can currently do things much more efficiently then before. The cost of this efficiency may seem inexpensive in many ways, however we do not realize that the cost of these new technologies do not just include money, time and labour, but it also costs us our well being as well as the beauty and comfort of our own home, earth. Ozone depletion, climate change as well as the direct effects of chemicals from industrial emissions and fuel combustion are a great threat to our planet and if nothing is done to resolve this problem soon, the results may be disastrous. There is a layer of chemicals twenty kilometers up in the stratosphere called the ozone layer. This layer protects the inhabitants of earth by reflecting much of the suns harmful ultra violet (UV) rays. Without this layer above us, many living things including humans could not survive. The ozone layer is currently depleting and the reason for this is believed to be caused by a few things. Deforestation, fertilizer use and fuel combustion are minor contributors to this problem while chemicals such as chloroflourocarbons (CFCs), halons, carbon tetrachloride, methyl chloroform, methyl bromide and hydrochloroflourocarbons (HCFCs) are the major contributors to the deterioration of the ozone layer. These chemicals have industrial halocarbons that break up into chlorine and bromine in the upper stratosphere when they react with the sun's rays. Chlorine eats up the ozone layer while bromine acts as a catalyst and speeds up the process. Often found in Antarctica, there are frozen chemical clouds in the upper stratosphere called polar stratospheric clouds. These polar stratospheric clouds destroy the ozone layer at a much faster pace then the industrial halocarbons. The depletion of the ozone layer is a great threat to mankind and all other living things on earth because without this layer of chemicals, we will be exposed to excess UV rays. This excess exposure can lead to many things such as malignant melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer, damage to eyes by means such as snow blindness and cataracts, which is the clouding of the eye that can eventually lead to blindness. Above all this, excessive UV exposure can lead to symptoms similar to AIDS as prolonged exposure could weaken the human immune system. Graduation plan refers to what we will do in our future, our educational plan at the organization and what we want to be just like the aim in our life. It’s very important to every student. I’ve also my graduation plan. I’m Shantanu Sarkar.I’m a student of BCSE at IUBAT. IUBAT- International University Of Business Agriculture & Technology. It’s the first non-government university established in Bangladesh. The initial planning began in 1989 and the university established in 1991. Degree programs started in 1992 with agreement with assumption university of Bangkok, Thailand. IUBAT strongly lobbied forth creation of non –government universities and supported the initiative of the government of Bangladesh in passing legislation for formal establishment of non-g overnment universities in the country. IUBAT now operates as a Non-government university Act of 1992. I’ve a graduation plan at IUBAT.I’m a student of BCSE (Bachelor Of Computer Science & Engineering). And I want to be a software engineer. So, the BCSE degree will be conferred only to the student who has fully complied with the graduation plans and has applied for it. This chapter is contained in an award-winning book (Houle Award for Literature in Adult Education) written by Michael Newman. He has extensive experience as an adult educator, working in both the United Kingdom and Australia in the fields of community, tertiary and trade union education. The Art Of Writing News The Art Of Writing News The Art Of Writing News By Sharon News writing is a key skill for journalists, but it helps with other types of writing as well. Thats because news writing is about telling a story quickly and concisely. Anyone can learn to do this, with a bit of help. Heres how you can write the news and get your story across. The technique also works well for writing press releases. News Writing Structure News writing has its own structure. Its called the inverted pyramid. This upside down triangle serves as a guide for how you include information in the story. Using the inverted pyramid means starting with the most important information, then putting the next most important info and so on. It can also serve as a guide for writing each paragraph in the story. Start with the most important point, then the next most important and so on. The inverted pyramid has an interesting history. Before digital printing and desktop publishing, news was laid out manually. If a late breaking story came in and the editor needed to make room, then the editor would order another story to be cut. Having the most important information at the top meant that readers always got the essential parts of the story. Writing The Facts Another way to think of the inverted pyramid is that you start with the facts and then add the background. So, how do you know what background to add? Its easy. You can use the 6Ws. Strictly speaking, there arent six Ws, there are actually 5Ws and 1H, but the formula seems to work. That mnemonic reminds us to include the who, where, what, why, when and how of a story. Why is this? Think about how you tell a story to your friends. You might say: Youll never believe WHO I just saw! Then you might go on to tell the story of where the person was, what they were doing, and why its scandalous. We all want to hear about people – and thats what news is about? Look at any news story and you will see that all of this information is in the first two paragraphs. Anything after that is background to the story. Let me give another example. If I were writing about a car crash, I would say who was involved, when and where it happened, why it happened and how it happened. Those would be the main points and my story might look something like this: Two people sustained serious injuries in a car crash at Hill Road at 6am today. The collision happened when Mr. Smith swerved into the opposite lane to avoid a dog in the road. Ms Jones, who was in that lane, was unable to stop in time. Both Mr. Smith and Ms Jones have been taken to the local hospital. This is not a perfect example, but you get the idea – and now you can write the news too.
